The Clem Barbour House

Welcome to The Clem Barbour House!

Garage Apartment now available ! Click the Garage Apartment Tab for more information.

The Clem Barbour House was built in 1910 for Clem Barbour who was a clerk at the J.H. Oglesby's General Merchandise store (info from "The Historic Architecture of New Bern and Craven County, North Carolina" by Peter B. Sandbeck). The home is the oldest home built in Bridgeton, North Carolina, although there is one home ( est. 1840) older that was moved from New Bern just across the river.

The home has had several additions over years including the addition of two bedrooms and a bath added in the early 1920's. A new Kitchen was added around 1940 and the home served as a boarding house around that time. The Barbour's' have two children still living and we have gotten some of the history from them.

Currently, this historic home is undergoimg renovation, respecting the old while embracing modern comfort.

Neuse River from the back yard

Backyard Pond, currently being landscaped

In the 1970's the rear porch was turned into a laundry room and a larger uncovered angled porch was added to the rear of the lower floor bedrooms. In the early 1990's the original wood siding and trim were covered with vinyl and aluminum.

To bring you all up to the present, my wife and I acquired the house in July of 2006 (with help of a dear friend W.W. Gilman) and in 2007 we had it moved to its new location on the Neuse River still in Bridgeton. We had a large dirt mound (241 loads) built to bring the home well above flood dangers and then put a higher foundation wall in.

We started some renovations prior to move that include the combining of the two lower rooms to make up the master suite. A sliding glass door was removed and a window put back in place (this area was the original kitchen), French doors were added in the kitchen and master suite. The doors open onto a large enclosed porch that has all the amenities of a modern kitchen. Most all of our cooking is done here.

The dining room has had a wall put back in place that was opened up some time in the past and a eight sided tray ceiling was built. At this time we are working on the parlor and foyer area fixing structural and cosmetic issues. The outside of the house is also getting a facelift as the vinyl and aluminum come down and wood and hardee-plank go up. At this time the home looks like an advertisement for Lowe's as it is wrapped in house wrap imprinted with the Lowe's logo. The home's electrical system has been completely upgraded from a mix of Knob & Tube wiring and mid 1900's wiring to that of the modern day.

The electrical service has been changed from 100amp to 400amp service. Cat5e internet wiring has been installed as well as RG6U cable. The Plumbing has also been updated. The Climate Control System has been redone and there are now two systems operating in the home.

The upstairs is under construction as the two rooms are being added to and redesign with their own private baths. The rooms are approximately 250 square foot and the baths around 80 square foot. The rear room over looks the Neuse River.
